We’re all in for a surprise

May 3rd, 2010

Having gone through tremendous amounts of electronic music productions through the years, it appears to me as if it becomes relatively harder and harder to find really stand out productions in the modern, electronic music scene. The ease of producing “good”-sounding music have become so relatively easy these days, with the development of DAW’s with accessible GUI’s and great sounding samplebanks, thus making it harder to search for and find the records, which sounds unique and personal, like a true expression of what would be on the artist’s mind in the moment of composition.

We all know the feeling of listening to something brand new, something that makes you shiver, something that raises the small hairs in the back of the head and more or less blows you away, instantly, and just makes you want to stay in that special place and drift away to the sounds embracing you, pushing the air around you and really moving your sonic world.

To me, this happens a few times every year. I find some productions, which really stand out from the rest and becomes my “landmark” tracks of that year, of that siginficant period of time. Usually, these productions are centered around a certain influence, a certain feeling in the music or experiences obtained when listening to the music, and usually, it would only be a couple of records every now and then.

But, then all of a sudden, I encounter some new and very unfamiliar sounds, which really get to me.
This weekend, I found the sound of Deer, with the help of mnmlssg. To be honest, I initially dowloaded the set, quickly skipped through it and then deleted it again, simply because it didn’t get to me again. I then read the post about the set:

And decided to download it again and give it a try. I started listening to it when I was sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight back home. Then sun had just risen on the sky, burning away the heavy mist still hanging around. And then it hit me, that special feeling, where you just know and feel; “this is incredible”.
The soundscapes and production is very special, very unique and definitely NOT yet another, mediocre Ableton perfomance  -even though Deer uses Ableton for his live pas. This is contemporary, electronic music of the highest level, giving room to emotion, thought and impression to form for the listener.

Live the dream, feel the energy, let it enchant you;

I bring you – DEER:

Dubby sundays

April 4th, 2010

Dehnert last night at CB was,  musically, a blast and a big success. Dehnert was, as expected, off the hook, and JATO-Unit will definitely go see him play another time. A pleasant suprise, though, was the local dj playing before Dehnert went on stage. A mature guy named Morten Kramp, playing all the good, classic techno pieces we all enjoy and love for their contemporary sound structures and sound scapes.

Having spend almost all day inside with the rain pouring down outside, I have looked inside myself and tried to find some music that really emphazises the feeling in the body after a long night on the dancefloor, no sleep yet and thoughts blasting away. This is where dub techno comes into mind…

Initially, I was introduced to dub techno by listening to the work of Rod Modell, Mike Von Schommer and Stephen Hitchell, also producing under the monikers Deepchord, Intrusion, CV313 etc. Having attended Luke Hess & Marko Fürstenberg playing live in Copenhagen, I was really hooked on the sounds they are pushing, and got more and more into dub techno. What really touches me in dub techno is the emotion and overwhelming effect of the productions. The sound almost appears embracing when listening to it on a proper soundsystem, driving the emotion and energy of the music forward, in soundscapes that almost always appear to be somewhat melancholic, cold and icy, yet warm and familiar. Pure bliss to my ears and heart, that is. And a great contrast to the spring rain outside, setting the mood on this sunday for me.
